Backflow prevention valves are one way to keep sewage from backing up into your basement floor drain. Many municipalities offer subsidies to eligible properties for the installation of backflow prevention valves.During 2010 (predominantly since June 2010), the City of Brantford experienced a number of extreme storm events. As a result, on August 23, Council passed a resolution supporting the new City of Brantford Basement Flooding Prevention Grant Program (BFPGP).
The program was administered through the City Clerk’s Department through the Risk Management Division.
The City of Brantford Basement Flooding Prevention Grant Program (BFPGP) provided one-time grants of up to $3,000 to residential homeowners who have documented recurring storm or sanitary sewer back-ups as a result of sewer surcharging. The BFPGP is based on compassionate grounds and is not considered an admission of liability on the part of the City of Brantford.
When a back-up occurs, the homeowner could call the Program Administrator, who will review the situation for compliance under the program. Each house was reviewed individually to ensure the eligible work will provide the required protection. When the review was completed, the coordinator will then advise the homeowner of their eligibility and options.
BFPGP consisted of a one-time grant to offset the cost of eligible work, which may include:
The installation of a sump pump with battery back-up;
The disconnection of weeping tiles from the sanitary or storm sewer;
The installation of a backwater valve to prevent sewer back-ups;
The re-connection of these weeping tiles to the sump pump;
Disconnection of downspouts from the sanitary or storm sewer system;
All materials, labour and the restoration of the disturbed property.
The maximum funding allocation of up to $3,000 was to assist homeowners with the installation of hardware or work described above.
Applications were to be received by the City of Brantford until 4:30 p.m. on March 31, 2011, after which time no further applications may be submitted. Following closing of the applications, all applications were reviewed and sorted by number of storm or wastewater backups that occurred during the period beginning on June 1, 2010, and ending on December 31, 2010.
